A truly unique and authentic cafe experience - Cafe Abysinnia serves up delicious authentic Ethiopian food. Located inside a small mall in Mt Roskill, its a nice little get away from the typical main streets of Auckland. Easy parking and accessible.
Cafe Abysinnia has a variety of meat (chicken, beef, pork, prawns) and vegetable dishes. I had the chicken and beef "curries" with their enjera (Ethiopian styled pancake).
This place is a great way to try something than the typical Mainstream Eggs Benedict cafes and for adventurous souls who want to try something in another continent.
Friendly, prompt and extremely helpful. The owner was more than happy to explain what each dish was and what the ingredients were.
A tad bit expensive for what it is. 2 chicken drumsticks, hard boiled egg in a curry for $18 was a tad steep.
It's hard to compare it to anything else Auckland has because there's nothing quite like it. The Doro Wot (Chicken marinated in lime juice, garlic, ginger, spices and herbal butter) was really tasty and not too spicy. The owner provided chilli powder to adjust for our spice levels. The Menchit Abish was a mince meat similar to the Doro Wot except the marinade was green and it tasted superb. The Enjera is similar to Indian Dosa except it has a slightly sour note as it is fermented. Overall I loved the food, mainly for its uniqueness and Ethiopian roots.
